BLUE NOTE

BLUE NOTE. This work is a tribute to the legendary cover art by Reid Miles for the jazz label Blue Note. Inspired by clean shapes, minimalist typography, and striking color fields, it directly references the iconic album cover *True Blue* by Tina Brooks. Rectangular planes in varying shades of blue, complemented by circles and linear elements, create a visual rhythm that captures the improvisational flow of jazz and reinterprets it through a minimalist aesthetic. BLUE NOTE is part of the art series “Blue in a Squar”, which includes 300+ artworks.

It has to swing.

Social music—that’s what jazz essentially is: musicians communicating with, against, and over one another. The importance of jazz in my life can hardly be overstated. My childhood and youth were defined by my love of jazz. That wasn’t always easy during puberty—who else was listening to jazz? Everyone else had ABBA, Sweet, and the Bay City Rollers on one side, and Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Nazareth on the other. So I had to musically assimilate a bit. That’s how soul, funk, and R&B found their way into my heart—along with a touch of pop and rock. But I always aimed to pick the raisins from every genre.

Blue Note Records and the East Coast jazz associated with it still shape my musical upbringing today. That’s why the artwork ‘Blue Note’ is essential. The chosen cover fits because it shows so many shades of blue. I also connect Blue Note with one of my greatest inspirations: Reid Miles, who was responsible for many of the label’s iconic cover designs. I could say a lot about the how, who, and why—but that would go too far here. Instead, I simply encourage you to listen to jazz: Miles Davis, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker—to name just a few. Just listen. Follow the conversations.
