FILM

The artwork “FILM” stages twenty-five iconic 35 mm cartridges in a precise 5×5 grid. Rendered in rich blues, canister shape, cap, and sprocket holes repeat like a visual mantra. The serial order evokes contact sheets and Pop Art, while honoring the tactile promise of analog photography, light meeting chemistry, memory meeting matter. “FILM” celebrates rhythm and repetition, and the magic of what is not yet developed: images that already exist in darkness, waiting to emerge. “FILM” is part of the art series “Blue in a Square”, which includes 300+ artworks.

The secret of the 36 pictures on a roll of film.

In my youth, I had the pleasure of spending entire weekends with my father in the darkroom. That meant I became familiar at an early age with the entire process – from photography, to developing the film, through to the finished black-and-white print on paper. And all the fine details in between. I was often the assistant in the darkroom. And time and again it felt like a miracle to watch how a photograph emerged on paper, depending on the craftsmanship and the characteristics of the paper. How intently you followed the process. But ultimately, it was only after drying that the reality was truly visible in daylight. Each one a small work of art. The grain. The texture. The depth. The gradients. The shades. The light. The shadow. The framing. All the way to the overall impression. The value of a special photograph was priceless. The art of the photograph, right up until it hung framed on the wall and unfolded its impact, was captivating. Since my father travelled to Japan/Tokyo every year in the 1970s and always took his camera with him, these moments were journeys of discovery of a deeply formative kind. To this day.
