CROSS

The artwork “CROSS” condenses geometry into a multilayered sign. A white cross rests like a cutout on deep blue, while translucent angular planes in graded blues slide above and below it. At the center, a small cube tilts, acting as a hinge between surface and space. Edges of light, overlaps, and shadows create a sense of rotation and depth. “CROSS” becomes a marker of intersection, shift, and balance: a lucid symbol that oscillates between construction and suspension. “CROSS” is part of the art series “Blue in a Square”, which includes 300+ artworks.

Ever since humans have been watching the sky, they have felt watched themselves. Is there life out there? And how close does it come to us? Or is it already among us? The world of fantasy is boundless when it comes to UFOs and extraterrestrials. It seems to be a purely human phenomenon that, when we cannot grasp or explain things, we prefer to consider completely insane ideas more likely than the most obvious explanation. With films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars and Alien, these fantasies were further fuelled. With series like Star Trek, the sense of certainty crept in that we could not be alone. Human beings would rather believe all sorts of things when they don’t know. And so, in the affluent society of the 1980s, a new form of absurd belief emerged. “Elvis lives” was only the beginning.

The artwork “Kreuz” is an allusion to this kind of belief: that something extraterrestrial, intelligent is on its way. Something unknown, uncanny and certainly hostile. But the fascination of not being alone has gripped everyone at some point. And so has the thought of gigantic, galactic spaceships. Until you realise that it doesn’t matter what you believe, because there are enough real things you should know more about in order to understand them.
