STONES

“STONES” Rendered in bold shades of blue, this work reinterprets the legendary “Tongue and Lips” logo of the Rolling Stones, created in 1970 by John Pasche and long since an emblem of rebellion, energy, and rock ’n’ roll. The iconic silhouette of open lips with an extended tongue is distilled to a minimalist form, with white areas defining the teeth and key highlights. An unmistakable band symbol transforms into a graphically pure art object, a homage to music history and timeless pop culture. “STONES” is part of the art series “Blue in a Square”, which includes 300+ artworks.

Pleased to meet you.

The Rolling Stones are one of the first bands to have their own logo. Together with The Beatles, they have grown into a brand. Across generations, countless people identify with them, with the values, the attitude, and what the band stands for: rock ’n’ roll. Even though, strictly speaking, the Stones are a blues band. But the lifestyle and what the band is known, famous, and loved for is rock ’n’ roll.

So much so that when people talk about rock ’n’ roll, they don’t just mean the music. They also mean a lifestyle. A behaviour. An attitude. It is more direct, louder, more open, more unconventional, wilder and it’s summed up in three words: sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. That, too, is a metaphor. Because even the Stones wouldn’t have survived all of that in excess. But those three words are meant to provoke as well. Rock ’n’ roll is the rebellion of an entire generation. Against their parents’ generation. It ushered in a social change that continues to this day. When we speak of rock ’n’ roll, we mean the other, the new, the unusual, the nonconformist. It marks a break with a past of obedience, submission, adaptation, and conformity. The tongue, the logo, expresses all of this. The wishes, promises, and goals of an entire generation could hardly have been captured more perfectly.
