Inspired by the legendary Ray-Ban Aviator, which since the 1930s has symbolized freedom, adventure, and effortless cool, the work merges design icon with cultural myth. It’s interesting that someone once had the idea to design glasses solely for pilots, at a time when there were only a few pilots in the world. Today such an idea would be unthinkable, because everyone would say, ‘The market is too small,’ ‘the target group too niche,’ and, ‘there would be no statistics.’ ‘No one has made pilot’s glasses so far; there must be good reasons for that.’ It sounds as crazy as work pants for people searching for gold. Or a sports shoe just for basketball players. Or a motorcycle suitable for both road and off-road.
What’s interesting to this day is that the true product icons that have stood the test of time, the 501s, the Chucks, the GS, the Aviator, would no longer be conceivable today. Because no one would be willing to take a risk anymore. Everyone always wants a slice of the big cake. No one can imagine baking their own cake, or that others might wear pants not originally intended for them, or sunglasses, or shoes, or a motorcycle.
Back when there weren’t all the statistics, surveys, trends, numbers, data, and facts. When people made things simply because they believed in them, because they were convinced themselves. It was exactly in those times that all these incredible icons emerged. Everything after that is just variation, copy, and derivative. That’s why the connection to these icons is so strong: they stand for the original, for the origin.
