Edward Hopper’s “The Long Leg” is one of those works for me. It ignites a long­ing in me of unimag­in­able scope: a sense of free­dom and self-deter­mi­na­tion in har­mo­ny with nature. The light­house as a guide, life by the sea, a dis­tant continent—all of this and more is set in motion every time I think of the paint­ing or see it. That’s why it holds a spe­cial place at the center of my life, radi­at­ing light­ness, hope, con­fi­dence, and optimism.

I’m also deeply moved by its painter­ly qual­i­ty, tech­nique, and crafts­man­ship. This is why it has a per­ma­nent place in my per­son­al cul­ture of pos­i­tive memory. What “Here Comes the Sun” is to the Bea­t­les and the music world, this paint­ing is to art.
