NIKON

The artwork “NIKON” portrays a classic single-lens reflex camera, precise, pared back, and modeled in subtle blues. Signature details such as the prism housing, shutter-speed dial, and the knurled lens ring are crisply rendered; the “FM3A” marking nods to an icon of analog photography. Set against a calm field, the camera becomes a distilled emblem of vision, craft, and memory. “NIKON” celebrates the tactile act of releasing the shutter, the magic of light on film, and the quiet poetry of captured moments. “NIKON” is part of the art series “Blue in a Square”, which includes 300+ artworks.

Objectively speaking.

In every era there have always been things people revered, idolized, and worshipped. Things that represented the nonplus ultra. Most were out of reach. When I was little, there was this Märklin station for locomotives with the turntable. I could admire it for hours in the catalog. Later, other things joined the list. The NIKON FM3A was also such an object of desire. Or an IBM ball-head typewriter. Some of these unfulfilled wishes and dreams came true; others did not endure. But even today I still feel that ‘must-have’ reflex when I encounter these things, even if they are from another time, even if they no longer really make sense. Once love at first sight, once longing, it seems to last forever.

Am I sad that many dreams didn’t come true? No. Sometimes the longing, the yearning, is more fulfilling than reality. The swooning is always perfect and ideal. Reality often looks different. Thus unfulfilled wishes remain flawless. That has a very special appeal.
